Orlando Chiropractor Answers Frequently Asked Questions about Cold Laser Therapy
What is cold laser therapy?
Cold laser therapy uses the energy of light to reduce pain, promote healing, and decrease inflammation. This non-invasive, drug-free therapy is an ideal complement to standard chiropractic care for the relief of acute and chronic pain.
How does cold laser therapy work?
Our chiropractor uses a handheld device to provide cold laser therapy. The device is about the size of a flashlight. It emits non-thermal pulses of specific wavelengths of light, which penetrate 2 to 5 centimeters below the surface of your skin, where light-sensitive cells absorb the light energy. Absorption of this energy causes changes within the “powerhouse” of the cells, known as the mitochondria.
Stimulation of the light-sensitive cells increases production of the cells’ energy source within the mitochondria. Stimulation also increases metabolism within the cells, which allows cells to make better use of energy, reduces pain and inflammation, boosts cell growth, improves the body’s synthesis of proteins and growth factors essential for healing, and enhances blood flow to hasten the healing of damaged cells.
In addition to stimulating light-sensitive cells, cold laser therapy also stimulates other types of cells near the surface of the skin, including muscle, nerve and connective tissue cells.
Does cold laser therapy heat up or burn my skin?
Because it uses a low-intensity laser, the cold laser therapy used by our Chiropractor in Celebration does not heat up, burn, or cut through body tissue. It is a painless procedure that sometimes causes warmth or tingling that stops after your treatment is done.
What conditions does cold laser therapy effectively treat?
This state-of-the-art treatment is a safe and effective therapy for a number of conditions, including:
- Neck and back pain from disc-related conditions
- Arthritis of the spine
- Knee pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Sports injuries
- Tennis elbow
- Whiplash
How long does cold laser therapy take?
Depending on the condition being treated, cold laser therapy takes 15 to 45 minutes.
Is one treatment enough?
Most patients benefit from repeated treatments. Our chiropractor will help you determine the number of treatments you will need to gain optimal benefit from cold laser therapy.
Is cold laser therapy right for everyone?
While cold laser therapy is safe and effective, pregnant women should not undergo cold laser therapy over their womb during the first trimester of pregnancy.
